In February 2025, the 65 Degrees North group preparing to deploy to the Hardanger region of Norway, came together for a pre-expedition retreat at East Shallowford Farm on Dartmoor, in the heart of the West Country.

The purpose of the retreat was simple but vital, to allow the group to meet, connect and build strong relationships ahead of their departure to Norway in March.

The group were accommodated in a plush barn conversion, complete with self-catering cooking and dining facilities, a comfortable communal lounge, and en-suite bedrooms throughout. This shared living arrangement played a key role in bringing the team closer together.

During the retreat, beneficiaries had a presentation outlining what to expect from the forthcoming Norway expedition, helping to set clear expectations and answer any early questions.

A full day was spent out on the moor, following a challenging route across Dartmoor that provided the perfect environment for the team to get to know one another, build trust and develop a sense of shared purpose. The self-catered nature of the event further strengthened bonds, as the group worked together throughout the stay.

Additional activities included hands-on farm work such as cleaning out and feeding the resident pigs and chickens, as well as clearing and burning wood to support the running of the farm. These practical tasks added an extra dimension to the experience and reinforced teamwork and mutual support.

The final evening was spent at a group dinner in the local village, Widecombe in the Moor.

Overall, the retreat was a great success, any initial anxieties present at the start of the meet were replaced with confidence, camaraderie and a shared sense of readiness for the adventure ahead in Norway.
