Training Weekend Builds Confidence Ahead of Arran Adventure
Published Sunday, 28th June 2026
The Arran Adventure team took an important step towards their September expedition with a successful training weekend at the Royal Marines Water Activity Centre in Exmouth, Devon, from 26–28 June 2026.
The expedition, organised by 65 Degrees North and delivered by “The Paddle Group” on behalf of the charity, will see eight beneficiaries undertake a challenging long-distance paddle around the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The Exmouth training weekend was designed to build the skills, confidence and teamwork needed for the adventure ahead.
Rob Wake and Dave Pearce from the 65 Degrees North team welcomed the group on Friday evening as they arrived and settled into their accommodation. The weekend marked the first opportunity for the team to come together, get to know one another and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
Training was expertly led by Lee Waters from The Paddle Group, whose extensive experience quickly put the team at ease whilst ensuring everyone was challenged and supported throughout the weekend.
Saturday began with assembling the expedition's Klepper folding canoes, giving participants valuable hands-on experience with the craft they will rely on during Arran Adventure. Once assembled, the team covered paddling fundamentals before progressing to a series of on-water manoeuvres designed to assess and develop individual and team paddling skills.
Launching onto the Exe Estuary, the group paddled along the stunning Devon coastline towards Dawlish. The favourable conditions provided an ideal training environment, allowing the team to build confidence while enjoying spectacular scenery and spotting some of the local marine wildlife along the way.
Not everything went exactly to plan but sometimes the best learning comes from the unexpected. The day concluded with some unplanned recovery drills, giving everyone the chance to practise essential rescue techniques in real-world conditions. Judging by the smiles, the refreshing dip also provided welcome relief from the hot summer weather!
Throughout the day, the team demonstrated determination, resilience and a willingness to learn, with every participant making excellent progress. It was highly successful training and an encouraging indication of what the team will be able to achieve together during the September expedition.
With the training weekend complete, the Arran Adventure team is well on its way towards what promises to be an unforgettable expedition in September.
